Pretty asian girl on N train back from Astoria. Three foot long, bone-straight tresses. Bulbous item in hand, she keeps touching it to the ends of her hair, and it takes me a minute to see that she’s trimming its ends with a nail clipper. Flanked by two indifferent friends, short pieces of her hair float to the floor, the seats, and their laps. 1:34 am, Sunday 6/1

Medium-build white guy in Union Square park stands just in front of Lincoln, facing the flagpole in the middle of the park. He wears basketball shorts and a dark t-shirt. Holds his hands outstretched just below his hips, cupping them. His knees are bent. His face is blank. A large black man sits ten feet away in a lump on the bench, watching. Maybe this is a Mr. Miyagi situation. 1:47 am, Sunday 6/1
