  • Does Not Make Me Happy

Jul 29, 2008 tagged as bank statement, mail, USPS

USPS, why is so much of my mail arriving like this lately?

I don’t especially mind when it’s a note from Granny or a product announcement from Cole Haan or OMMA Magazine that’s opened or torn up in shreds.*

However… my bank statement?  Thanks for resealing it, but please, let’s be more careful with this one.

*(I take that last part back; I can’t stand it when my mail arrives torn up in shreds.  And that one time?  When you shredded half my credit card bill, and my account number was pretty visible through the damage… Yeah, that time I was apparently so angry that I couldn’t photograph it.)

Point is, why so often with this all of a sudden, huh?

  • McCain: deteriorating brain, walks with a cane

Jul 28, 2008 tagged as crappy campaign, fundraising, politics, presidential race

I’ve never seen a more stodgy, presumptuous campaign than this one.

Last Wednesday, Eric received a letter “From the Desk of John McCain” at work.  (He’s not on any other relevant lists, so it must be the WSJ subscription database.)

    Anyway.  Johnny Boy opens strong:

    Dear Friend,

I’ve taken the liberty of enclosing a McCain 2008 bumper sticker for you.  I’m hoping I can count on you to display your sticker right away as part of our effort to build momentum and excitement across America.

John, did you guys really think it was a good idea to use black and only black for your bumper sticker?  Put this puppy on an armband, and you’re ready to be remembered.

And the idea that THE BUMPER STICKER is your main excitement-building tool?  You are clearly on top of things.  Your opponent, on the other hand, is obviously wasting his time.

Also, I really love it when politicians claim that they’ve made something anything clear.

Senator Obama talks about change.  But his idea of change is to raise your taxes, radically expand the size and scope of our government, and implement a cut-and-run strategy in Iraq.

I have made it clear that I will keep taxes low, cut wasteful government spending, and ensure our troops come home victorious and with honor in a war that is a critical part of a larger struggle against radical Islamic extremism.

Wow, you guys are good.  First of all, underlining 70% of those sentences really helped me read them.  And the fact that you’re still using the phrase “cut-and-run”?  That communicates persistence.

Regarding “wasteful government spending,” though… How about cutting that Defense Department spend as a first step?  Yeah, I think $120 billion per year in Iraq might make a nice dent.

McCain needs our money now because he’s done such a good job with all the funds he’s raised so far.  (Most expensive bumper stickers, ever.)

  • That New-Fangled Technology

Jul 28, 2008 tagged as cell phones, farm, NYT, polygamists

Inside Their World is the photo series that follows the lives of some of the returned families at the Yearning for Zion ranch.

On July 17 and 18, the photographer Stephanie Sinclair was allowed to visit the Yearning for Zion Ranch near Eldorado, Tex., and given rare access to the members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or F.L.D.S., who live there.

One of the photos is better than all the rest combined.

“Harold Black Jr., 22, Levi Steed, 15, Guy Jessop, 48, and Jacob Johnson, 30 (left to right), check their cellphones in front of Jacob’s house.”

Since when does a group of three or more men come together in a circle to “check their cellphones”? Perhaps, instead they were erasing vital information, like, I don’t know, the birth dates of their youngest wives.

Or maybe I’m too cynical.  This could merely be a “what exactly do these things do again?” meeting.
