  • Tall Glass of …Milk

Jul 25, 2008 tagged as cold, milk, summer

Sometimes, my favorite thing on a hot day (besides, say, dreaming about living in an air-conditioned apartment) is ice cold milk in the orange juice glass.

Not exactly the long-term refreshment you might want, but icy nourishment on days you don’t feel like eating much.  Yum.

  • Basil Garden

Jul 8, 2008 tagged as basil, garden, lemons, plants, summer, tasty

Basil is the only thing I can both consistently keep alive (in this apartment), and use on a regular basis.  An extremely valuable intersection.  Here’s my current basil family.  In a week, it’ll be ready for another pesto harvest.

Good basil always takes me back to LA (the part I liked), and my former garden glory, where I had flourishing basil, oregano, flowers, and

    lemons!

  • How To: Talk in Italy

Jun 30, 2008 tagged as Italian, Italy, phrases, summer, vacation

It’s summer, and I know you want to go away, so why not Italy?  (Yes, I’m trying to live vicariously.) Here are some useful phrases for your trip:

    Seriously, I’m from Canada.
    è veramente, sono di Canada.

Yeah, I agree, the Americans should definitely elect Obama.
Sono d’accordo, gli Americani dovrei scegliere Obama.

    That pizza was awesome, man.
    Questa pizza è stato fantastico!

Where can we get some weed?
    Dove possiamo prendere qualche marijuana?

No, I swear, I thought he was a woman.
Lo giuro! Ho pensato che lui è una donna.

I lied before. I’m from New York.
Ho mentito prima. Sono di New York.

    I need the American Consulate.
Ho bisogno andare al consolato americano.

No, you can’t send me back to Canada.  Look, this is an American passport!
Non puoi mi rimpatriare in Canada.  Guarda, c’è un passaporto americano.

Wow, it looks like you’re planning an eventful trip. I think I’m glad I’m staying home.

  • Wind and Fire

Jun 16, 2008 tagged as rain, summer, thunderstorm, trees, wind

The wind came in strong before the most recent bout of rain a few hours ago. The trees on Union Square East looked like they were going to uproot and drift away like giant feathers, and people were having trouble walking upright.

    They were scrambling for cabs,

and ducking for cover from all the debris in the air.

(click to see more crap than usual flying around)

It got darker and darker, but I never heard the thunder I was waiting for, so I’m assuming that wind, not lightning, was the culprit. We went from this:

    to this:

But NYC Parks came quickly, lest any other tree parts hit a pedestrian.

And now the city is quiet again.

Answer: Wind, not Fire. The End.
