Urban Volleyball
A crowded night at Union Square park. Among gymnastic twirlers, skateboarders, ravers, and rappers, volleyball players have found a home.

Union Square Ain’t Nothing to F*ck With
on Vimeo. These guys might have been helpful at the protest earlier, but they showed up much too late. Still, it’s a decent theme to adopt (for much different reasons).
Six hours earlier, we had:
The guy with the purple wig, riding his white stallion.
The First Amendmentress, who regaled the crowd with a constitutional recitation.
Reverend Billy, conducting the crowd.
An army of cyclists…
And plenty of passersby who stopped to listen.
Make sure you come out for the Push Back Picnic (Wed, July 2 at 6:00pm).

Announcement!
I’ve gotten tons of emails asking about Union Square: what happened, when did it happen, and why aren’t you posting more photos? The answers are: I don’t always know, I don’t always know, and because I have to work, I can’t stay tied to the window.
So today, take a look at Union Square live, a webcam monitoring the action from the spot I’d usually shoot from. We’ll be adjusting the positioning as necessary, so please email me if you have any ideas for it.
This doesn’t mean I won’t snap the occasional update to the progress down there, but Union Square live is available twenty four hours, seven days, while I’m …not.
Thanks for paying attention to what’s going on at Union Square, Washington Square, and all of NYC’s public spaces.
Coming soon: coverage of yesterday’s Union Square protest.

Ground Traffic Control
I went to the window tonight, looking for the culprit behind the whooping noise on the street (yes, I’m 73) and instead of paying attention to the revelers below, I noticed a street light down inside the construction site at Union Square park. (The construction boundaries were erected around the traffic light.)
I’m sure the ants were happy when their new stoplight arrived; maybe tiny traffic cameras are coming soon.
Seriously, I wonder how this happened.
Drunk driving on the CAT?
If the whole ant-traffic thing doesn’t work out, they could move this show downtown. A new red light, special for the girls.
UPDATE 4:29PM: The light has been repaired to serve humankind, and the ant community is wild again, unchecked.
